Margaret, a young American, is traveling to Italy and staying with nuns at the Vizzardeli Orphanage while she gets ready to wear the veil. Margaret is motivated to make a difference in the world by Cardinal Lawrence. She is teamed with Luz, her roommate, who is eager to know herself better before committing her life to God. Margaret first sees Carlita when she is separated from the other children at the orphanage. After being interested in this, the American tries to talk to the unique orphan. When Father Brennen arrives to let Margaret know that everything is not well and that the Catholic Church is attempting to find a method to spark a new era of religion, her innocent world of devotion rapidly becomes out of control.
