The film, which is based on a New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr, the author of A Civil Action, tries as hard to get people interested in contract law as Jamie Foxx’s furious personal injury lawyer, Willie Gary, does to get a jury’s opinions on complex legal matters. Funeral director Jeremiah O’Keefe of Mississippi is suing funeral home and cemetery conglomerate The Loewen Group after the latter allegedly delayed buying three of his locations in an effort to drive him out of business. Jeremiah employs Willie in the hopes that, together with his young, attractive lawyer Hal Dockins, his loud demeanor and pristine trial record help their cause become a tale.
