The Brutalist, I found myself utilizing part of the film’s 215-minute intermission to research the name László Toth, convinced that the architect featured in Brady Corbet’s captivating yet perplexing film must have been a genuine mid-century figure. However, much like Lydia Tár before him, Toth is entirely fictional—an invention of Corbet’s imagination, embodying a particular school of thought, an artistic tradition, and an entire epoch. His character is so convincingly crafted that it can deceive an unsuspecting viewer like myself, presenting a detailed exploration of an individual that appears to reveal profound truths about a broader context. The Brutalist is structured in two segments. The first titled “The Enigma of Arrival” and the second “The Hard Core of Beauty.” Corbet demonstrates a penchant for such thematic embellishments, striving to convey the significance of his work.
