The Room Next Door marks Pedro Almodovar’s 24th feature film as a director and his first project filmed in English. Although he made his English-language debut last year with A Strange Way of Life, that work was essentially a longer short film. With The Room Next Door, Almodóvar fully embraces the challenge, adapting Sigrid Nunez’s novel What’s Missing You? As is his custom, he also penned the screenplay. The story revolves around Ingrid and Martha, who have drifted apart, partly due to Ingrid’s years spent in Paris. Upon returning to the United States, Ingrid learns that her friend Martha is seriously ill, battling advanced-stage cancer.
