The 19th-century tale Poor Things tells the tale of Bella Baxter, a young lady whose lifeless body was discovered and brought back to life by Dr. Godwin Baxter. Baxter is a nonconformist surgeon whose father experimented on his disabled body for scientific studies. Godwin, whose surrogate daughter loves and properly refers to him as God, recruits Max McCandles, one of his most perceptive pupils, to keep a close eye on Bella and write detailed notes on her development as she quickly regains her cognitive and motor skills. However, Godwin seduces Bella into leaving her home and the only people she has ever known in order to tour the world with him after naively introducing her to lawyer Duncan Wedderburn.
