In 1993, Ed, a widower from Kentucky, lost his wife to Wegener’s sickness, leaving him to care for his two daughters. Michelle is battling a liver condition that could potentially need a transplant when she is five years old. Despite his growing sense of pessimism and his growing medical expenditures, Ed tries to keep his despair at bay by concentrating on his work as a roofer. Sharon, a hair stylist, battles alcoholism and makes an effort to put her personal issues aside. Ed is not aware of Michelle’s attention as she meets with her to understand the matter after learning about it. As Sharon eventually comes to understand her duty for the youngster, she starts a fundraising effort to help pay Ed’s medical expenses. Sharon is just encouraged to work even harder by this.
