The narrative, set in New York City in 2003, introduces us to Cassandra “Cassie” Webb, a talented but awkward paramedic with a passion for life-saving medicine. Even when they have saved someone’s life, Cassie and her partner, EMT Ben Parker, refuse to accept gratitude or compliments from others in order to carry out their tasks with emotional detachment. She’s not much of a people person and doesn’t socialize, but after escaping a near-death incident at work, everything changes. Cassie discovers through this mishap that she is psychic, and she links this to her mother Constance’s studies on rare spiders in the Amazon rainforest during her pregnancy.
