In the first scene of Leave the World Behind, the misanthropic media studies professor Amanda Sandford, an advertising professional, approaches her husband about taking a last-minute trip to Long Island. She starts out by saying, “As you know,” before going on to explain why Clay and their children might wish to leave town. Her remarks, which are much the same as everyone else’s in the movie, are way too wordy and formal in tone to be taken seriously.
