The only antagonists in Immaculate, in contrast to Satan and his goons, are the men in charge of a tiny Italian convent and, to a lesser degree, the ladies who work directly for them. A young nun who is afraid and wants to leave the monastery is followed and bound by four frightening nuns wearing red masks in the opening scene. It is obvious that something is amiss at Our Lady of Sorrows from this point on. It takes some time for Cecilia, a young American nun who has recently arrived at the convent, to realize that grave problems are brewing in this small slice of heaven.
