In 1959, Hellboy is accompanied by Bobbie Jo, a B.P.R.D. colleague. As the two escort a massive spider on a train journey across Appalachia, the rookie experiences her first fieldwork. A fight breaks out as the creature is startled into consciousness, causing the train to crash and leaving Hellboy and Bobbie Jo alone themselves in the middle of nowhere. Lost in the forest, the two make their way to a secluded farmhouse with a cursed child, where they meet Tom, a soldier coming home to confront his past, and discover more about local witchcraft. Tom offers to accompany Hellboy and Bobbie Jo on their journey to visit Cora, a witch who has gone too far in her mischief, as he is aware of the presence of evil in the area.
